I was simply amazed at the amount of history that was put into this story. I feel like I learned so much about the Conestoga wagon, the Indian tribes, and about the whole land deals that William Penn made with the Indians. There were a few times that I couldn’t help but set the book aside and look up some of these topics to learn more about them. I fully intend to dive a little deeper into my learning about this time period because I did not know a lot about any of this! I love historical fiction that drives me to learn more.
With that said, this can’t be where the story ends! There’s no pretty tie stuck at the end of the story to make the readers feel better. There are some unknowns but the reader is led to think a few different thoughts. My inital thought was “No! It can’t end like this!” Then it moved to “Okay…maybe there’s another book.” After a day to process, I’ve resolved myself to the fact that life isn’t always full of happy endings, so why should books?
Fisher did an excellent job with portraying her “villian” in the book. I’ll admit. I was a bit partial to the villian. I liked him a lot at the beginning of the book. To be honest, I still liked him at the end of the book. I didn’t like how he treated the Indians and his hostile attitude towards them. He did redeem himself at the very end, though.
There were many heart-wrenching scenes throughout the story, but I think that worst one was towards the end. I had tears in my eyes when the story took a turn. Just when you thought things couldn’t possibly get worse, it did. I couldn’t even begin to imagine life at this time and all the fear and prejudice that was all throughout the lands.
At the end of this story, she previews her next book, which makes me think there is no more story to tell in this series. I thoroughly enjoyed hearing about Anna and Bairon’s journey together. I enjoyed seeing their start in life and now reading how it ends. If I had a favorite character, it might be Rumpled Martin. I just loved his and Tessa’s interactions!
When you start this series, read all 3 close together! Have your phone handy so you can look up some pictures from this time period!
I received this book free from Revell Publishers in exchange for my honest opinion of this book.
