I’m not a patient person. I am certain that my struggle with patience made the word “waiting” stand out to me in the title. I passed it over once, thinking it probably wouldn’t be a book for me. However, I couldn’t get the word “waiting” out of my head so I decided to grab it while I could.
Betsy Childs Howard focused her book on 5 different seasons that find us waiting:
We wait for a spouse
We wait for a baby
We wait for physical healing
We wait for a stable, loving home
And sadly, some of us have to wait for a rebellious child or an unfaithful spouse to come home
Of course, there are many other seasons in our lives that leave us waiting, but she just touches on these. However, I do think many of the points she says in these sections can easily carry over into other parts of our lives that find us having to wait.
I can look back on my life and see God’s faithfulness in each time where I was called to wait patiently. By doing that, I’ve been able to see that it wasn’t easy, but God was still working and was still there.
I most appreciate Howard saying that we may never see what we’re waiting for to happen. Thank you for not sugar coating it and promising us answers. She is quick to point out that we may see it in heaven when our waiting has ended because it may never happen on earth.
The other thing I liked is how she reminds her readers that by waiting, God is perfecting us and making us more like Him. He’s not just going inactive. He’s still working! The book is constantly pointing us to the bigger picture–when we will be with Christ in heaven. Eternity is the bigger picture. So friends, wait with patience knowing it won’t last forever. It is but a season.
I received this book from Crossway.
