I appreciate how Shelly Shepard Gray does not shy away from hard issues in her fiction books. She meets them head on. This book begins with Julia running away from an abusive man. That wasn’t necessarily where I thought a Christmas story would begin!
Levi was a man that I immediately liked. He was having to figure out his own way through some deep grief, but thankfully he meets Julia and Penny. They may be just what he needs to keep moving forward.
There’s a little twist, though, when it comes to Julia. She isn’t quite able to tell the truth in everything because of how she can’t risk her life or the life of her daughter’s by her ex finding out where she is.
The plot thickens as she has decisions to make about when to stay and when to run, when to trust someone and when not. Julia has to count the cost and Levi is trying to figure out the roles he plays in several different relationships.
I’m sad to see this series end, but I am looking forward to what Gray will be writing next!
